Over the past 18 months, Leksands Municipality, in collaboration with Asurgent, has carried out a major modernization of its IT infrastructure. The goal? To build a future-proof, efficient IT solution that meets the municipality’s growing needs for flexibility, security, and scalability. Through a close partnership, Leksand’s servers have been successfully migrated to Microsoft Azure—a key milestone in their digital transformation journey.
About the company
Leksand Municipality is characterized by its villages with red-painted houses and strong traditions – and that is indeed the case. Leksand hosts Sweden’s largest Midsummer celebration in “Gropen,” attracting around 30,000 participants. It also boasts a vibrant community life featuring a wide range of cultural and sports activities, as well as strong local brands like Kulturskolan Leksand (Leksand’s School of Culture), Granberget, Leksandshallen, and Leksand’s upper secondary school.
Services delivered
The project kicked off in the spring of 2024 with a detailed analysis of the municipality’s needs and how Azure could provide the best solutions. This phase wasn’t just about mapping technical requirements—it was about identifying how cloud solutions could drive real operational value.
Asurgent used Microsoft’s Cloud Adoption Framework (CAF) to design a customized Azure architecture. At the same time, risk assessments were conducted to ensure that the migration met strict security, compliance, and financial sustainability requirements.
This preparatory phase was critical—it provided a clear decision-making framework and minimized uncertainty before the migration. With a solid plan in place, the project was able to move forward without disrupting daily operations.
The actual migration began shortly after and followed a “lift & shift” approach, moving the municipality’s existing servers to Azure with minimal modifications. At the same time, some modernization efforts were implemented to ensure that the systems were better suited for future demands.
One of Azure’s biggest advantages is the ability to combine scalability with high security. The migration also introduced enhanced monitoring and automation, reducing the workload for Leksand’s IT department.
Like any major IT transformation, the team faced challenges—from technical roadblocks to complex security and compliance requirements. However, through a flexible and solution-oriented approach, these issues were resolved without significant disruptions.
With the servers successfully migrated to Azure, Asurgent continues to support the municipality with modern monitoring and governance solutions. Through Asurgent’s CloudOps services, the IT environment isn’t just operating as expected—it’s also continuously optimized to meet future needs.
This project has been a major milestone, unlocking new opportunities for innovation and development. Joacim Gifting, IT Manager at Leksands Municipality, summarizes the experience:
When we started this project, we felt both excited and slightly nervous. You don’t rebuild an entire IT environment every day. But Asurgent has been a fantastic partner throughout the process. They didn’t just help us migrate to Azure—they gave us the confidence that we were making the right choices for the future.
What really stands out is how they work—transparent, engaged, and always ready to tackle challenges as they arise.
Thanks to this project, we now have an IT infrastructure that not only meets our needs today but is also ready to grow and evolve with us. Our employees are already noticing the difference, and we look forward to continuing to develop our solutions with Asurgent. I’m proud of what we’ve achieved, and I’m confident that we’re on the right path to facing future challenges head-on.
